Under the Shadow of HIS
Wings ~ Psalm 91

The Oregon drizzle greeted me
as I was leaving the apartment to run an errand. Drizzle is gray, wet,
cold, damp, windy, rainy Oregon winter weather. Happy New Year! The
first day of 2003 had arrived and I was pondering, what is a Happy
New Year? I mean really! I have been hearing that phrase for over
fifty years and what does that really mean?
Traveling slowly through traffic, a horn blared behind me. Truly, I hate
horns. They are loud, abrasive, rude, and jolt the peace right out of
you! Looking around I could not see anyone I recognized so continued
through the intersection. The horn blared again. To my left was a bright
red tow truck, manned by a driver waving at me. I don’t know any tow
truck driver’s I thought as I pulled over. I checked my mental list
- lights on, trunk closed, doors closed, doors locked…every thing
seemed in order. He knocked on the window as I rolled it down and said
very politely, “Ma’am, you have a flat tire.” This must be part of the
Happy New Year I was pondering before. The monogram patch on his blue
uniform says, Mike. He seemed like a nice guy and then asked me
if I had AAA, which, unfortunately I didn’t.
After a bit of discussion and him explaining that because it is a
holiday, the car dealership, which is just two blocks away, is closed.
Then he offers to change the flat tire.“ Just take a couple of minutes,”
he said as he quickly retrieves the needed tools from the tow truck. The
mini-donut tire does not come equipped with air so he filled it with a
tiny red compressor. It was the very last bit of air in the compressor.
With the expertise of someone who has changed hundreds of tires, within
minutes, the replacement tire is in place. In that small space of time,
I learned that Mike was married. He had an emergency call early this
morning where a man died at the scene of the accident and that he was on
his way to another call. Boldly, I asked him outright, “Are you an
angel?” Laughing, he said, “Some say I am, some say I ain’t.” Quickly
packing up his tools, throwing the flat tire with a large screw imbedded
in it into the trunk, he exhorts me to have a “HAPPY NEW YEAR!”
Usually the grace of GOD overwhelms me and this was another one of those
moments. Praying a blessing over Mike as I started the car, in my spirit
I hear, Under the Shadow of the Wings of the Almighty. The LORD
GOD is so faithful to protect, provide and take care of HIS own!
My prayer for you is that you will have this kind of NEW YEAR! That
before you know the need, the LORD will send the answer. That before you
could even think to pray or ask for help, HE will intervene and show up
on the scene. That the sounds that you associate with bad news, will
become sounds that you associate with good news. That you will find
yourself talking with one of GOD’s messengers and perhaps rejoice that
you were the one that survived the car wreck. That the LORD GOD will
send all that you need including just enough air to fill your tires to
keep you on HIS Path for HIS GLORY!
Do you hear it? The sound of a car horn blasting - Oh, that must be good
news…
HAPPY NEW YEAR! ~ HAPPY NEW YEAR!
