The Brocken Spectre - Article # 282 by T. Neil Davis

"Most air travelers have observed glories in the vicinity of their aircraft's shadow on the clouds below. The glory is a part of the phenomenon familiar to mountaineers who know it as the Brocken Spectre.

According to legend, the name came from the unhappy circumstance of a climber on northern Germany's highest mountain, the Brocken. Working his way across a narrow precipice, the climber was startled by the sudden appearance in the nearby mists of a human figure with a ring of light around its head. Frightened, the climber fell to his death. If this event really took place, it was the climber's own shadow that he saw, and the ring of light was his own "glory" ring.

Two requirements must be met if one is to see her or his own glory. One must look exactly in the anti-solar direction and there must be many water droplets in the region where the glory is to appear. Since the shadow of one's head appears only in the anti-solar direction, it makes sense that the glory ring will always be in the vicinity of the head's shadow.

Glories are common in high-latitude regions where the low sun angle allows a person to easily come between the sun and a fog or cloud bank. But glories are most easily seen when one is riding on the shadow side of an aircraft above the clouds. The clouds below provide the necessary water droplets.

(As a personal note many times in flying I have seen this phenomenon. It looks like a circular rainbow is around the shadow of the plane, except that not all colors of the rainbow are present.)

The glory ring is caused by the phenomenon called diffraction. Sunlight penetrates individual water droplets, be they in rain, fog or clouds, and reflects off the back sides of the droplets. Some of the light emerges from the droplet to come back essentially toward the toward the sun. But the sunlight coming back toward the sun from different raindrops interferes with itself to create circular zones of darkness and brightness. The diameter of the zone for each color of light is different. Consequently, the glory an airplane passenger sees always is red on the outside, just as is a primary rainbow. If more that one glory is seen, the color pattern repeats, red always being outermost."

Until May 1998 the above theory could not be proved....then....

In May 1998 a group of researchers from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma fired electromagnetic pulses of 0.1 THz with a spectral peak at a wavelength of 1 mm at a 6.35 -mm-diameter aluminum sphere. A short optical pulse from a laser directed at a dipole antenna generated the radiation. Another opto-electric system, illuminated by a delayed laser pulse, allowed time-delayed reception of the scattered signal. By changing the time of delay, glory rays were separated from direct reflections. The scientist found the spectrum of the glory ring was consistent with theoretical models.

(In April 2001, we sent the State of Oklahoma Glory Ring to Jan Filtz of Stillwater, Oklahoma....only GOD could have set that up!)

Over fifty years ago, scientist H. Van de Hulst explained "glory" scattering in terms of waves traveling around the surface of each droplet. Each water particle radiated weak wave fronts in the direction of the observer. (Perhaps we ought to begin praying that GOD's glory would scatter all over the earth in waves of each drop of water!)

As the Holy Spirit brought me into the ministry of making Glory Rings, truly for two years I just walked in obedience making the rings, not beginning to understand the spiritual significance. The above articles obviously lend to the knowledge that we cannot always prove what we know, even in our lifetime. We do not begin to understand the raw energy of GOD. When man thought the earth was flat it was round and when man thought the rainbow was an arc it was a circle. And in the 1950's a piano belonged in bars not something as holy as a church.

My prayer is that the Holy Spirit will enlarge your understanding of the magnitude of GOD. That HE is not confined to time or space or height or weight or depth. That HE is so much more than we who are finite can begin to imagine. May you have a reverential fear of HIS majesty, power, greatness and goodness. And that HIS waves of Glory, HIS Rings of GLORY, HIS Glory Rings will bless you beyond words!
